Louise Mackenzie
Viral Experiments
Queen's Hall Hexham UK. 14th January – 4th March. 2017
Curated by Dominic Smith
Louise Mackenzie is an artist who works with living material and biotechnology as a part of her art practice. This exhibition was a collection of experimental works from her PhD research at Northumbria University.
Investigating the use of life as material, specifically, the insertion of synthetic DNA into living organisms, Mackenzie touches upon the emotional weight of working with life in the laboratory. The work considers the distance from the subject effected through layers of technology and tries to find ways to foreground our relationship to living material in the lab.
